Whether you are a person diagnosed with cancer, a family member or a friend of someone affected by cancer, there are times when you may need support.  Support is available through many professional services and peer support programs.  For further information on the avenues of support available to people affected by cancer, click on the links below.

The Cancer Council Helpline - support

The Cancer Council Helpline is staffed by trained professionals with knowledge about cancer and cancer care.  They are there to help you with information, support and referrals to other services.  Our Helpline is available from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Friday. For more information click here.

 
Counselling

Cancer can, at times, leave you feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Counselling can help by giving you the opportunity to talk through problems and learn new ways of coping. There are a range of places you may be able to obtain support and counselling, depending on your needs and where you live.

The Cancer Council Queensland has a Cancer Counselling Service which may be able to help you.

Talk to someone like me

Talking to someone who has had a similar cancer experience can be an incredible source of support and information.
The Breast Cancer Support Service and Cancer Connect programs are free and confidential and all of our volunteers are fully trained. Find out more here.

Support groups
Cancer support groups offer mutual support and information to people with cancer and often to their families. Many people who have attended a support group say that it can help to talk to others who have gone through a similar experience.

Information about cancer and cancer treatments
After a diagnosis of cancer many people search for more information about cancer and cancer treatments. This is a very normal and common response and accurate information can assist people to feel more in control and assist them with decision making about their treatment options.

Complementary and alternative therapies

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) are terms often used to refer to a large range of health care practices and products considered outside of mainstream conventional medicine.

Some people who have cancer may try complementary or alternative therapies in the hope it will help them to cope better with cancer and treatment, or that it might help treat their cancer.  When making decisions about any of these types of therapies it is important to be fully informed and to seek the advice of your doctor.

Dealing with advanced cancer
Advanced cancer diagnosed in adults usually cannot be cured by current treatments. However treatment can often be used to slow the growth and spread of the cancer and reduce symptoms.

There are a number of advances in treatments for some cancers that enable the cancer to be kept under control for long periods, often for months and sometimes for years. For more information about dealing with advanced cancer, click here.

Help with practical issues
A diagnosis of cancer can present many challenges, and some of these are very practical issues such as transport to the nearest treatment centre, accommodation away from home, financial difficulties due to loss of income, or the need for a wig, breast prosthesis or practical home aides.
